How do you develop a typeface? What happens between initial sketches and the final digital font file? And how many iterations are necessary to have a working typefamily after roughly four months?
This publication works as theory, process and type specimen. It illustrates the development of Dato during the last four months at the Type & Media Master course at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague. Rough initial sketches as well as the development of characteristic design details are both part of the process part. Furthermore, the specimen part of the book shows how Dato can be used and how the single styles of the family work together in different surroundings.
