The collection of the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister (Old Masters Picture Gallery) at the Dresden Zwinger of more than 750 paintings from the 15th – 18th century is regarded as one of the most important. During the last two years the gallery has been renovated and its first part has opened for the public again by the end of February 2016. Together with fellow Leipzig based design studio Gourdin & Müller we were working on the new signage.

A sensitive, contemporary design, paired with an exclusive, not yet released geometric Sans Serif make sure that the signage blends in perfectly with the architecture and still reflects the representative character of the gallery. All letters, floor plans, arrows and figures consist of a corpus of 10mm depth, painted in the same color as the wall it sits on, as well as a 2mm bronze facing that reflects minuscule details in the overall architecture of the gallery. This attention to detail ensures that the signage has an almost stucco like appearance and reflects the representative character of the place perfectly.

A powerful new identity system for both, the umbrella brand as well as its subsidiaries.

The new brand architecture has been jointly developed in an intense process, in which the local roots of Schmitt Werke and the increasing international focus of the group have been combined in a new claim. The new color range has been carefully readjusted and extended so that all brands have a clear distinction within the range and the system stays flexible enough to allow for future brands to find their place amongst the others. Furthermore we developed a consistent design grid for various communication materials, which allows for a very coordinated and integrative corporate identity throughout all brands.

All around Europe “Stolpersteine” are a reminder of people that have been deported during the Nazi regime in the Third Reich – among them were not only Jews, but also gays, intellectuals, members of opposing political parties etc. Cobblestones with their names and birthdays engraved in front of the houses the victims lived in remind us of how ubiquitous the Nazi repression and persecution was. The metal stones keep our memory of all those once anonymous victims alive, they give them a name and a story.

We designed the banners for the travelling exhibition about “Stolpersteine” in Leipzig. Individually selected cases with portraits, documents, diary entries and texts are freely arranged around a static, duplex-coloured historical middle axis, that puts personal the fate of victims in a broader socio-historical context. Transfering the all-to-well known historical documents such as pictures of concentration camps, iconic buildings and disturbing decrees by the Nazis into an iridescent colour range takes away some of the historical weight and creates a very modern feel to the whole exhibition.

The design is complemented with a very versatile typography, which intertwines pictures with texts and allows for a playful approach to a rather serious topic.

THE WYE is a hybrid that melds the most productive elements of institution, creative agency, accelerator, art house, community initiative, incubator and lab into one company to evolve culture, industry and society.

Together with Nadine from JUST DAMN R!GHT we developed, designed and optimized the comprehensive corporate identity system of THE WYE, ranging from logotype and stationary to brochures to supporting their digital brand management across various social media channels.

Within this process JUST DAMN R!GHT first captured what THE WYE actually is in all its facets and translated the brand’s mission into a guiding yet engaging brand statement: Redefining the intersection of art, design and technology.

Second we improved the existing logo and jointly developed and designed a new visual identity system which is founded on the idea of a Y-shaped track arrangement and the angular degrees of where lines in the visual merge. We also created a custom headline font that extends the diagonal design principles into typography. The entire branding system is drawn on this geometry, from the word and logo mark to brand architecture, typography, graphics and visual patterns across print and digital media. Due to its geometric rules the system stays consistent, but at the same time offers dozens of possibilities to create flexible, visually unified design solutions.

This newly developed and designed series takes a fresh look at some of these icons – visually not like most of the books in the tourist shop around the corner, but more like a magazine reduced to the size of a paperback.

Derived from the narrow proportion of the book, the typography takes that on with the use of a classy yet powerful narrow typeface. Together with the extensible colour range the stringent, yet flexible typography and layout principles visually distincts this series of books.

Bright color schemes, a typography that is both elegant and classic, a very flexible corporate design and a modern, abstract image-concept add to a serious, modern brand that distinguishes itself clearly from the usually bleak com-petitors. Since it was not yet publicly available Tiempos Text, the typeface used for their corporate design, was used in a custom hinted pre-release version for webfont use on the new LM website.
